Importance of Vitamin K2 and D3

Why Vitamin K2 and D3 is important.

Importance of Vitamin K2 and D3

Vitamin K2 is one of the four fat-soluble vitamins needed for a healthy functioning body. It specifically plays a part in calcium metabolism, heart health, and blood clotting.

Regulates Calcium Deposition
Arguably, the most important role of Vitamin K2 is to regulate calcium deposition in the bones. It makes sure your body is depositing calcium n the bones, not in other tissues like blood vessels and kidneys.

Prevents Heart Disease
As a result of this property, vitamin K2 plays a big role in preventing heart disease. As you may know, calcium deposition in arteries that supply the heart can lead to fatal heart disease. Due to the regulation provided by vitamin K2, calcium deposition is prevented, therefore the risk of acquiring such disease is reduced. A study published in 2004 concluded that people with the highest intake of vitamin K2 were 52% less likely to develop artery calcification and had a 57% lower risk of dying from heart disease.

Prevents Osteoporosis
Additionally, research has found that vitamin K2 also reduces the risk of osteoporosis in menopausal women. A study conducted in  March 2013 found that postmenopausal taking low-dose vitamin K2 supplements for three years were found to have a slower decrease in mineral bone density. Good mineral bone density also means that the risk of pathological fractures is decreased.

Improves Mineral Bone Density
Vitamin D3is fundamental to maintaining bone health. It plays its role in conjunction with calcium improving and maintaining mineral bone density (the maximum amount of bone tissue reached during adulthood). The higher your bone density the less likely you are to develop weak bones prone to fractures.
When you have low levels of vitamin D3 your body tends to steal it from your bones which results in the phenomenon mentioned above. It is termed osteoporosis.

Improves Muscular Strength
Vitamin D3 is also important for muscle strength. According to a study published in February 2017 higher levels of circulating vitamin D3 were associated with an increased muscle mass and strength. Both these factors lead to better functioning muscles.

Aids Immune Function
High levels of vitamin D3 have also been correlated with better immune function. The immune system fights off infections from pathogens like bacteria and viruses. Research has focused on the role of vitamin D3 in protection against illnesses like pneumonia and other acute respiratory infections. You may recall a recent respiratory infection that engulfed the world- COVID-19. Whilst research hasn’t proven any direct benefit a paper published in October 2020 has concluded that low levels of vitamin D3 put you at higher risk of catching the deadly infection.
